I will never forget my Junior year of high school and the dreaded feeling of my stomach sinking when I had to face the music. US History. I dreaded us history. I knew I was going to flat out fail. But thanks to the powers that be. I was saved. The man chosen for me to learn US History from was Bill Miles. Or Mr. Miles as I would come to know him. My first class with him, I hated him. I wondered how this was possible, the most LOVED teacher at Gateway, and I hated him? I went home to my mom that night and told her, I don't like him, obviously she made sure I went back. Into class two, I learned why everyone loved Bill Miles. He made school fun, he made it interesting!! It came to a point where, I looked forward to his class every day. He allowed you to eat in his class, for some reason my chosen breakfast at that time, was baby carrots and saltines, every day, he would walk by and steal a cracker, telling me he needed it cause he was diabetic and his blood sugar was low. He was of course lying, but I always let him steal a few.
Unfortunately, he left us March 31 2009. When I heard the news, I cried and then I stopped because, I knew Mr. Miles would not have wanted us to cry. And I also knew what my breakfast would be the next morning, saltines and baby carrots. His celebration of life was today, and it is amazing how one person, touched so many lives in different ways. Bria, Nicole, JJ, Michelle, Scot and I went to give our final goodbye to Mr. Miles. He was a wonderful person and an even better educator. Rest in Peace Mr. Miles.I leave with this quote.
"How lucky I am to have known someone who was so hard to say goodbye to” ~Unknown~ ~Cheers~Samantha
